She was singer performer designer and broke barriers in the world of music. She was an Mexican American artist who was traditional yet modern. She brought both cultures together and helped bring Tejano music into mainstream culture. It was an emerging star whose untimely passing splintered it. And as is common with a talented, charismatic and young artist dies too soon people mourn the possibilities that she could not yet achieve. In order to prevent her achievements from becoming forgotten, many fans over the past times have been motivated to do even more. Her tragic murder by a gunman triggered an outpouring of emotion in Latino communities similar with the reaction to Elvis Presley's death and John Lennon's. Selena was an extremely loved Latino performer across North America. Her music transcended cultural barriers and touched the hearts of youngsters as well as older adults. Selena was an asexual, flamboyant performer on stage and was often called the Latina Madonna. Off-stage Selena was an outstanding role model, as she actively participated in antidrug and AIDS campaigning.
